Purpose- The purpose of this course is to give students a taste of an outdoor adventure with an overnight in the woods. Students will participate in introductory camping activities and adventures. Students will learn basic canoeing skills, camping, birding and hiking skills.
*This course is designed for students that are interested in the outdoors and would like a basic experience in wilderness camping.
Overview- Students will spend 3 days at various Dakota County parks and 4 days at camp Amnicon in Wisconsin on the banks of Lake Superior.
Part I: Students will be on campus hiking and canoeing. Students will go on multiple long hikes of 5-10 miles, and paddle on the canoe trail at Lebanon Hills Regional Park. They will learn to canoe and portage. Students will be using parks and trails around the metro area to build stamina for the outdoor adventure.
Part II: Students will travel up to Amnicon Camp (about 20 miles outside of Duluth). At the camp they will participate in a two day/two night Namekagon River adventure with rustic camping along the river. Students will spend one day and night at the camp, learning outdoor skills and will be hiking to Lake Superior. Students must be able to:
Hike up/down hills for multiple miles on unpaved terrain
Paddle a canoe for several hours.
Carry a canoe to/from a river and in shallow areas.
Sleep in a tent, outdoors.
Use primitive or the woods for restroom facilities.
Be without cell phone access for 4 days.
